Teaching Workshop: Philosophy Workshop in the Prison of Opera 2
A.Y. 2022/2023
Learning objectives
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:
Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate
Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.
Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

The workshop aims to offer an introduction to women's political thought through the analysis of three texts that have become classical. In 'Of the Equality of Men and Women' (1621) Marie de Gournay, Montaigne's fille d'alliance and editor of one of the editions of the 'Essais', not only argued that women have a right to education, but also affirmed that they are equal to men. 'The Enfranchisement of Women' (1851) is the most important theoretical essay by Harriet Taylor, a political thinker committed, together with her husband John Stuart Mill, to protesting against the legal inequality of the sexes and denouncing marital violence (not punished by law at the time). In "The Sexual Contract" (1988), Carole Pateman proposed a fascinating reinterpretation of modern political theory according to which what establishes societies is not the social contract, but the sexual contract, on which the marriage contract is based, and therefore the prevalence of the political right of men over women. Although at different times and in different ways, these thinkers capable of challenging the prejudices of the era in which they lived critically questioned the political, economic, cultural and social reasons that lead women to be subordinated to men. The study of their analyses allows for a more conscious critical reflection on an issue at the centre of the debate and life of contemporary democratic societies such as the gender question.

Prerequisites for admission
The admission to the workshop requires no preliminary knowledge
Teaching methods
All meetings require the active involvement of students. In addition to participating in debates to critically reflect on the gender issue, students will present the key themes and concepts of the texts under examination each other. After a general contextual analysis, the lecturer will indicate the passages to be analysed during the debates; she will point out the parts to be examined through guided or autonomous research of other critical studies and other sources; she will provide materials to be examined individually and/or in groups in order to deepen certain themes; she will organise the individual and group work, paying particular attention to the moment of feedback and commentary. Through debates, discussions in group works and oral presentations, students will learn to organise information and to disseminate scientific contents.
Teaching Resources
The teaching materials will be provided in photocopies to the students lesson by lesson, so that they can use them during the meetings. No slides, videos or other multimedia tools will be used during the meetings.
Assessment methods and Criteria
In order to obtain the 3 cfu for the workshop, students are required to actively participate in the proposed activities (debates, discussions, group work, oral presentations) and write a final paper. All information regarding the final paper will be provided by the teacher during the first meetings.
