Biotechnology in Pharmacology
A.Y. 2023/2024
Learning objectives
The course is aimed at providing the student with a view of the biotechnological drugs already available for the treatment of various disease, and to provide the basis for the identification of new pharmacological targets and the design of novel biotechnological drugs.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will have a deep knowledge on the biotechnological drugs on the market, and she/he will be able to apply the knowledge to the identification of new targets and the design end evaluation of novel drugs.
Lesson period: Second semester
Assessment methods: Esame

Course syllabus
The course is structured into two parts
1. Pharmacological Biotechnology (Role of biotechnologies in identifying new therapeutic targets): genomics, epigenetic, proteomics, metabolomics, genetic engineering, recombinant protein, oligonucleotides, organoids. Innovative drug: gene therapy; cell therapy.
2. Biotechnological drugs.
Pharmacokinetic of biotechnological drugs; drug development; monoclonal antibodies; pharmacology of metabolic disorders; pharmacology of hemostasis; pharmacology of the CNS; replacement therapy; antiviral therapies; antineoplastic drugs.

Prerequisites for admission
The student must have knowledge in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular pharmacology (drug interaction with targets).
Teaching methods
Lectures accompanied by thematic insights proposed to students (organization into groups to discuss, analyze and bring back to the classroom the newest discoveries deriving from the scientific literature).

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a test in which the learning of the topics discussed in both modules will be evaluated.
The exam consists of a written test of one hour and 30 minutes concerning the topics covered in the two modules which will consist of 4 open questions (2 for each module) and 10 multiple choice questions (5 for each module). For each question asked, the evaluation will take place on the basis of the correctness of the answer and the demonstrated understanding of the principles learned. The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths and will be communicated via the official unimi website for registering the exams.
