Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basics to analyze, in a dual perspective, strategic and operational, the issues related to environmental management in relation to companies and all types of organizations.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the principles that are at the base of the circular economy and of the new business models oriented not only to optimize economic performances but especially social and environmental ones with a view to sustainability, ethics and engagement of all stakeholders. The student will develop skills in the management of environmental problems in the magerial field.

Part I: Strategic Management and the nature of competitive advantage.
Strategic management process and concepts, value of vision, mission and corporate objectives, the role of corporate governance and stakeholder management, coherence in strategic direction. External analysis: Porter's Five Forces model, the general environment, the competitive environment, the national environments, and creating the environmentally aware organisation. Internal analysis: value chain analysis, resource-based view of a firm, evaluation of firm performance.
Nature of competitive advantages and sustainability. Different levels of strategy. Low cost, differentiation and focus strategies. Factors affecting a firm's competitiveness. International expansion. International, multidomestic, global and transnational strategies. Creating value and diversification, outsourcing, acquisitions, internal new ventures, international strategic alliances, and restructuring. Horizontal and vertical integration.

Part II: Environmental Management and Circular business models.
Compare the different roles of, and relations between, firms, governmental agencies, not-for-profit organisations and other actors in relation to issues concerning environmental and natural resource management and sustainability.
Describe the motivating factors and processes for integrating environmental and natural resource management and sustainability issues with the strategies, operations management and global surveillance of organisations.
Describe and analyse circular business models of companies.

Teaching methods
The course will alternate different teaching techniques: lectures, seminars, case study analysis and tutoring of team work. Lessons may also include pre-recorded materials.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test.
In the written test will be assigned some exercises with a combination of open and multiple-choice questions, aimed at verifying the ability to understand managerial problems. The duration of the written test is commensurate with the number and structure of the assigned exercises, but in any case, will not exceed two hours. There are a mid-term test and project works that replace the written test for the first exam session. The results of the written tests and the intermediate tests will be communicated on the SIFA through the UNIMIA portal and/or through the Ariel platform.
