Learning objectives
The purpose of the course is to introduce the students to the know-how concerning the preparation and controls of the main cosmetic products; in particular, the basics of formulation, preparation and quality control of cosmetics, also with the aim of the product stability evaluation, according to the latest regulatory aspects.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will acquire a specific professional competence to be able to prepare cosmetic products in compliance with the current legislation and regulations. Training in the lab will allow to consolidate the theoretical concepts.

Technology
Introduction to skin: structure and function. The skin barrier, principles and mechanism of percutaneous absorption. Methods for studying percutaneous absorption. Methods for enhancing percutaneous absorption. Liposomes.
Physicochemical principles: interfacial phenomena; disperse systems: colloids, emulsions, and suspensions. Rheology. Formulation aspects of semisolid preparation for cutaneous application (ointment, cream, gel and paste) with different viscosity. Decorative cosmetic products.
Legislation
The rules governing the production and the marketing of the cosmetic products and other herbal products (medicinal products, medical devices and health foods).
Prerequisites for admission
To access the exam it will be necessary to have acquired basic notions in Chemistry.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The evaluation includes 1. a written test of 4 questions on topics related to the legislation, time available about 50 minutes; it is necessary to answer the questions reaching a score of at least 18/30; 2. an oral test of 2 or 3 questions on skin absorption and cosmetic technical topics and laboratory. The outcome of the test on legislation (1) and the planning of that on formulation (2) are communicated within a few days. Final evaluation is given for 30% by the test on legislation, 60% by test on formulation, 10% work done during the lesson.
