Illness and Health in German Culture
From the 18th century onwards, a new vision of the relationship between body and spirit, material and intellectual life, gradually asserted itself in German culture. The source of physical illness begins to be sought in the system of interactions with the activities of the mind, in terms of what Enlightenment philosophy defines as commercium mentis et corporis. The course will examine various moments in which the state of health and illness have been studied and interpreted as symbolic manifestations of social, cultural, and ideological conditions.
