Music is investigated based on the theoretical, philosophical, and aesthetic ideas, which have informed it over the centuries.
Expected learning outcomes
To understand that music is a complex phenomenon, with a focus on its intellectual premises rather than on its acoustic nature, studying its relationship to the period and context in which music is produced and consumed.

"A Horse in Power: The Music of the Roman de Fauvel".
The Roman de Fauvel was a political poem written in France at the time of Dante. Among the numerous manuscripts, the most important one (Fr. 146) was decorated and enriched with musical inserts: it is the oldest codex of ars nova, a notational technique that would mark a turning point in the history of music. The contents of the manuscript will be insert in the society of the time, its iconographic component and musical elements: notation, genres and performance practice.

The course will primarily rely on the following:
- Davide Daolmi, Storia della musica: Dalle origini al Seicento (Firenze: Le Monnier, 2019).
- Gervais du Bus, Chaillou de Pestain, Roman de Fauvel, ed. Margherita Lecco (Milano, Trento: Luni, 1998).
Assessment methods and Criteria
The candidate will present a course topic to the class (on a date to be agreed) as a multimedia paper.
Non-attending students: The examination involves written work on a topic agreed in advance with the professor. To take the examination as a non-attending student, it is necessary to have taken Strim/1 (I semester) or Strim/2 (II semester).
