Medieval Records' Analysis and Critical Edition

Learning objectives
The course has an approach oriented to the acquisition of both knowledge and practical skills and aims to offer students notions, vocabulary, ideas and tools for critical analysis in order to understand different forms, responsibilities, techniques and functions that connote production, conservation and transmission of documentary sources, especially those of the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student will be able to
1. identify and contextualize various types of documentary sources;
2. critically identify and analyze the formal, intrinsic and extrinsic, elements of each documentary source;
3. understand and use in a precise and relevant way vocabulary and notions of Diplomatics, Codicology and Paleography necessary for the exegesis of documentary sources;
4. apply the methodological tools learned in solving theoretical and practical problems;
5. orient oneself, with a critical attitude, among the different methods of publication of documentary sources.
These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous meeting with the instructor in the classroom. The discussion around the proposed documentary sources will be an essential moment of critical reflection and methodological learning.

Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the degree admission.
Teaching methods
Attendance at classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of method, competence, and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher both in the classroom and, if it will be possible, in archives and libraries is an integral part of the didactic method and it aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
In addition to frontal lectures, team and/or individual exercises are envisaged.
