Learning objectives
The course, is aimed in particular at first-year students and intends to address the problems related to the political, economic and social dynamics of the early-modern age states from the mid-15th century to the revolutionary age and the new order imposed with the Congress of Vienna. During the lessons we will refer to the different historiographic interpretations with a consistent use of the sources from early-modern period of history, for the methodological purpose of promoting a critical reading and understanding of historical events and monographs.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will have acquired the knowledge of the political-institutional, socio-economic and cultural development of the history of the early-modern period, from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century. They shall also be able to place the most representative events and figures in their chronological and geographical contexts. The student will be able to use language tools (language properties, correct specific lexicon) to express, in a clear and effective form, concepts of a political, institutional, economic, and religious nature; they will be able to read critically historiographical works and use the main tools, including digital tools, for the research and analysis of sources. These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous meeting with the instructor in the classroom. The discussion around the proposed sources will be an essential moment of critical reflection and methodological learning. Participation in meetings and seminars organized within the Department of Historical Studies will also be of great importance. Students opting not to attend the lessons will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, deepen their knowledge of main topics through special readings with the agreement with the instructor, and of course contact the instructor either by e-mail and during office hours

Second semester
Course syllabus
Title of the course: From Nouvelle France to Haiti : Logics, Practices and Actors of the French Empire in the Early Modern Age (1605-1804)
Module 1: Outlines of Early Modern History (1515-1715)
Module 2: From Sovereign Absolutism to the Turn of the 1830s (1715-1830)
Module 3: The French Atlantic between History, Myth and new historical trend
Prerequisites for admission
The course is in fact designed and developed to address students at the beginning of their university career. However, the study of modern history is based on the ability to develop a critical learning of the notions transmitted during the lectures or individual reading of the texts that will be indicated.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher in the classroom is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
Attending students are those who attend at least two-thirds of classes.
The teaching is also based on didactic and multimedia material provided on Ariel, which students are encouraged to consult regularly. In addition to frontal lectures, team works and/or individual presentations are envisaged (reading and presentation of original documents or historiographical sources).

International and Erasmus students are invited to promptly get in touch with the professor in order to arrange a reading plan (available in English or French) for exam preparation.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Verification of learning may take place in two different ways at the choice of the student.
The students who attend at least two-thirds of the lectures are considered to be attending students.

1. Written intermediate test + final oral test (reserved for attending students)
The written intermediate test is made up of closed and part answers and takes place at the end of the second module. It covers the chronology and the main political events of the period studied and more generally relates to the contents of the textbook. No text or support will be allowed during the test, which takes place during class time. Its result will be communicated on Ariel in compliance with the rules on privacy. The grade for the written test is equivalent to half of the final grade (maximum 15 thirtieths)
The oral examination relates to the third module and the monographs indicated in the programme. The duration of the latter is approximately 20 minutes. The mark for the oral examination is equivalent to half the final mark (maximum 15 thirtieths). The marks for the two parts are added together to form the final mark. Assessment parameters determining the final grade

2. Single oral test
For all those absent from the written test, knowledge is tested by means of an oral examination at the end of the course according to the classical procedure. Discussion of the texts studied lasting approximately 30 minutes. On this occasion, the student will be assessed with a single grade expressed in thirtieths.

In both cases, the assessment parameters are:
1. The ability to discursively organise knowledge through the use of specialised vocabulary and full command of the Italian language (approximately 30% of the final grade).
2. The ability to communicate precisely the main knowledge acquired through individual study (approx. 60% of the final grade).
3. The ability to develop critical reasoning towards the acquired notions, reinserting them in a basic historiographical or social context (approx. 10% of the final grade).

The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the relevant office.
