The aim of the programme is to provide students with a solid grounding in linguistic, philological and literary studies, and, as far as the classical study path is concerned, also in historical, documentary and archaeological studies. The chronological span ranges from Antiquity, through the Latin middle ages and the Romance origins, to Italian literature and language of the modern and contemporary age. Such training is aimed at fostering the development of a mature critical attitude and awareness - which is the ultimate goal of studies in the Humanities. It therefore also entails a strong focus on methodological and historical aspects, with some degree of variation depending on the two curricula and their specific features.
The skills and knowledge acquired during the curricular courses as well as the experience developed through lab activities and internships are aimed at enabling graduates in Humanities to pursue professional careers in all areas which require a good knowledge of facts and cultural processes, effective writing skills, advanced specialised literary and linguistic notions, critical use of information. The envisaged career opportunities include areas such as traditional and digital publishing, journalism and text production, the promotion and organisation of cultural activities, the management of the literary and cultural heritage, human resources.
Upon completing their course of study, graduate students will have acquired the required preparation for admission to master degrees and first level master programmes. The curriculum also enables students to obtain ECTS in disciplines which are a prerequisite for a future career as secondary school teachers.

Employment statistics (Almalaurea)
Admission requirements
Applicants to the degree programme must:
- hold an upper secondary-school diploma or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad
- have an adequate educational background in the following subjects: Italian, history, Latin and, for those who intend to enrol on antiquities studies, Greek. Good general knowledge is also required.

Admission assessment
Those who intend to enrol on the Humanities degree programme must take a test before formalizing enrolment. The test will assess their educational background and allow them to make a more conscious choice of their study path. The test consists of a set of questions relating to the above-mentioned subjects. Test details will be posted to the website:
https://lettere.cdl.unimi.it/it/iscriversi

Additional learning requirements (OFA)
A negative test result does not prevent applicants from enrolling. However, candidates who fell short of the threshold will be required to fulfil additional learning requirements (OFA).
For more details on remedial activities, see the call for applications at:
https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/frequentare-un-corso-di-laurea/iscriversi/iscriversi-una-prima-laurea

Additional Learning Requirement (OFA) for Latin
In order to fulfil the Additional Learning Requirement (Obbligo Formativo Aggiuntivo - OFA) for Latin and gain admission to second-year exams, students are required to achieve A2 level in Latin per the European Curriculum Framework for Latin.
Latin proficiency is assessed as part of the admission test to the chosen degree course. Candidates not achieving A2 level will be required to fulfil an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA) by attending the Latin language course for beginners organized by the University of Milan Language Centre (SLAM) and passing the final test.
The Department supports students' international mobility, through:
- Erasmus+ 'call for study': thanks to agreements signed by the Department with some UE Universities (Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, Czech republic, Spain, Hungary, to which Swiss confederation and United Kingdom must be added), students can apply for about 40 fellowships. Funding allows students for study-abroad experiences (courses and exams) that will be recognized by Unimi, if they comply with the 'learning agreement' that must be signed before departure and approved by the Department's Erasmus committee.
- Erasmus+ 'Traineeship': funding allows students to do traineeships based at UE academic or research institutions (Swiss confederation included). Applicants to the Summer call should identify a host institution autonomously, whereas the Fall call offers traineeships based on the agreements signed by Unimi, among which some are offered by the Department.
Attending courses is strongly recommended. However, each course offers an ad-hoc syllabus for non-attending students.

a11 - WARNING: Some courses are activated for only 6 ECTS, and can therefore be selected only in this form. Most of the courses are activated for 9 ECTS and can be selected both for 9 ECTS, when provided in the options, and for 6 ECTS only, with a partial program indicated in the syllabus. It is also possible to select these courses for 6 ECTS, but take the exam on the complete 9 ECTS course by adding 3 ECTS electives to the 6 ECTS. The same applies to any non-compulsory 12 ECTS courses.
a12 - Moreover, the student must earn 6 ECTS (3 + 3) in other training activities, which are assessed with a pass or fail score. These credits can be earned through 1) the workshops proposed or approved by the degree programme, 2) internships, 3) further language assessment (https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/competenzelinguistiche/altre-lingue-test-e-corsi/studi-umanistici-accertamento-della-conoscenza-di-lingua-francese-spagnola-e-tedesca3-cfu). As a rule, at least one of the activities should belong to the first group.
a13 - The student also has 15 ECTS available for electives. These credits can be allocated to in-depth study of subjects already included in the study plan, within the maximum number of credits awarded by these courses, or they can be allocated to courses other than those included in the study the plan.
The 'advanced' courses require having previously taken the exam in the corresponding foundation courses, the same happens for the courses 'Italian modern and contemporary literature' and 'History of Italian Language'. See the course progression in the following framework:
