Learning objectives
The aim of this course consists in:
- describing the morphology of cells and tissues related to their function, drawing the attention on the dynamic aspects of their interactions inside our body
- obtaining a basic knowledge on human anatomy from a functional point of view, particularly related to the study of macroscopic anatomy
- describing the normal and proper functioning of the various human organs and systems.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student should:
- know the macroscopic human anatomy of the following systems: skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, reproductive, Nervous Central System
- know the physiological bases of the above-mentioned systems
- be able to use the correct terminology in the morphological and functional description of the human body systems.

Prerequisites for admission
No prior knowledge required.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written test with quizzes (with 3 or 4 answer options). The test can also be taken twice in the same session.
The final exam aims to assess the achievement of the set educational objectives. The student must demonstrate that he has understood the structure of the human organism in its fundamental traits for the survival of the individual. The teachers reserve the right to carry out an ongoing test with quizzes which will be confirmed to the students well in advance. The final grade of the entire integrated course will be defined by the weighted average of the grades reported in the individual modules (Physiology, Anatomy Histology).
The booking on the UNIMIA portal, within the dates established for each appeal, is mandatory for the examination.
Physiology
Course syllabus
Cell physiology. The membranes in the body; cell membranes; the liquid compartments of the organism; movement through the membranes; distribution of water and solutes in the body (OSMOLARITY).
Nervous system. Organization of the nervous system; the cells of the nervous system; electrical signals in neurons (Nerst eq., Goldman eq., electrotonic potentials, action potential); intercellular communication in the nervous system (SINAPSI).
Physiology of the muscle and the cardiovascular system. Skeletal muscle; overall view of the cardiovascular system; pressure, volume, flow and resistance; the myocardium and the heart; the heart as a pump.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into a series of lectures with Power Point slides accompanied by practical exercises on 3D macroscopic anatomical models. The lectures slides are uploaded to the Ariel website.
