Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding of the preventive initiatives implemented to protect the health of workers, the main risk factors present in biomedical laboratories and the behavioral rules aimed at preventing accidents and occupational diseases.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire knowledge on the legislation concerning safety and health in the workplace and on which elements risk prevention is based.

INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
Brief history of occupational medicine
from the epidemiological approach to the preventive one
Occupational diseases yesterday and today
Concepts of prevention, occupational disease, accident at work.
Definitions of damage, danger, risk and health promotion.
Laws for the safety and protection of workers
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in occupational medicine
The prevention figures and the role of the occupational physician.
RISK ASSESSMENT
∙ Chemical, physical and biological risk factors
∙ Evaluation of exposure to chemical agents
∙ Environmental monitoring and limit values
∙ Toxicology and biological monitoring
∙ Individual susceptibility
BIOLOGICAL AGENTS
∙ The most relevant biological agents in the health sector: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, tuberculosis
∙ Transmission routes
∙ Containment of biological risk
∙ Individual and collective protection devices
∙ Good practices / waste disposal / surface and hand washing
∙ Behavioral rules to follow in case of contact with potentially infected biological material

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons supported by visual means. During the course of the lessons some examples of application to the risk assessment for biomedical laboratory technicians will be discussed and commented.

The educational material prepared by the teacher is made available on the Ariel platform.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written (test with questions with open / multiple answers).
The test will be corrected at the end of the test. The results will be communicated to the students immediately after the correction. The task will be commented by the teacher who will provide the correct answers and respond to any doubts of the students. The passed test will result in an Approved judgment.
