Learning objectives
- To know tools and methods for assessing the association between occupational and environmental exposures and health effects
- To know the main health risk factors associated with work activities in different occupational sectors (agriculture, industry and services) and evaluate their diffusion and modification in relation to the recent evolution of work activities and socioeconomic conditions.
- To know the methods for assessing exposure to main occupational risk factors and their health effects. To illustrate the meaning of environmental and biological monitoring and health surveillance.
- To know mechanisms of action and health effects of the main chemical, physical, biological and organizational risk factors.
- To know the legal obligations mandatory for a doctor who suspects an occupational disease.
Expected learning outcomes
- To know how to collect a complete working history with particular reference to the following aspects: work tasks; used substances; duration and characteristics of the exposures; general conditions of the work environment; personal protective devices
- To hypothesize the occupational origin of a given disease and indicate the appropriate diagnostic tests to verify it.
- To know how to interpret the meaning of biological markers of exposure and effect
- To know the main tools for risk assessment

Work history - INAIL insurance
Biological monitoring and health surveillance
Classification of risk agents
The exposure limit values
Irritating agents: skin, respiratory system, eye
Allergic dermatopathies
Allergic bronchopneumopathies
Pneumoconiosis
Solvent exposure and related health effects
Occupational cancers and carcinogens
Stress and work; shift work
Physical agents: pathologies from vibrations and noise
Musculoskeletal disorders
Exposure to metals and main health effects
Alcohol and drug use in work environment
Air pollution and health
Epigenetic markers and exposure to environmental and occupational toxicants
Prerequisites for admission

Teaching methods
The course takes place mainly with lectures. Small group exercises are planned for the execution and reading of Respiratory Function Tests and Professional Audiometries.
Students are invited to collect a work history which are discussed with the teacher at the end of the course

Assessment methods and Criteria
WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST.
The written test consists of 30 multiple choice questions plus 5 open ended questions.
The evaluation is out of thirty
The results of the written test are published on the ARIEL website dedicated to the course and the student must communicate whether he/she accepts or rejects the mark
If the student refuses the mark of the written test, he/she must take the oral exam again
