Learning objectives
The course aims at introducing advanced students in reading, interpreting and editing unpublished Greek texts on papyri and ostraca.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: The students will become familiar with ancient writing and they will learn to overcome the difficulties of unpublished texts. At the same time, they will acquire knowledge on bibliographic resources, optical systems and digital tools commonly used by papyrologists.
Skills: By training on images of papyri and ostraca, students will be able to read, understand and interpret unpublished texts. Furthermore, they will learn how to use special optical systems essential for reading and reproducing papyri and texts on pottery sherds.

Course syllabus
The course is organized in two Parts, which allow the students to master the byzantine texts and to learn gradually how to read, interpret and edit unpublished texts on papyri and ostraka.
The first Part the focuses on some papyri from Byzantine period (4th - 7th cent. AD) with literary, liturgical and documentary texts.
In the Second Part, each student must prepare, under teacher's supervision, an unpublished text for publication, i.e., the transcription, the translation and commentary. This paper is submitted to the teacher by the end of the Course.
Prerequisites for admission
The students must have attended a base - Course of Papyrology.
Teaching methods
Lectures, slides, class discussions, podcasts in the Ariel platform of the Course (http: //ariel.unimi.it). Students will find all the materials and news on this Ariel site.
Attendance in the lectures is strongly recommended, students who cannot attend must promptly contact the teacher.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral examination that aims at verifying the student skill in reading the writing and in understanding the texts on the papyri.
The images of some papyri treated in the lectures are submitted to the candidate and for every piece he must:
1) make clear characteristics, provenance and content; 2) read on the image and translate the lines transcribed during the lectures; 3) comment on the read part of text; 4) analyse the writing.
Oral examination aims at verifying the student skill in working on unpublished texts. For this reason, the student, before applying for the exam, must present and discuss his paper with the teacher.
The assessment is declared in 30/30 (the minimum is 18/30) and is grounded on the following criteria: 1) skill in reading ancient byzantine texts; 2) acquired skill in reading a text on papyrus and in preparing its edition.
International or Erasmus incoming students are kindly requested to contact the teacher. Also students with disabilities, and/or SLD, should contact the teacher, in order to discuss alternative examination.
