Learning objectives
The Course aims at providing students with the background for appropriate management of equine health and welfare, in support to other professional figures
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: the student should acquire the knowledge of the management of health and welfare in sport horses.
Applied knowledge and understanding: the student must demonstrate to possess knowledge and concepts that allow him to independently propose a correct description of the management of health and welfare in sport horses.
Making judgments: the student must be able to critically and actively evaluate the information provided both by the teacher and the international literature
Communication: the student must be able to elaborate and communicate the concepts acquired during the lectures with appropriate and updated terminology.

Lifelong learning skills: the student must demonstrate that he or she has the capability to learn and to independently increase the knowledge about new emerging issues in the field of equine health and welfare.

Impact of disease on athletic performance and equine management (2 hours)
· Knowledge and application of biosecurity protocols to ensure safety in equine premises and housing (i.e. cleaning and disinfection of boxes, surfaces, troughs, mangers, paddocks, etc.) (2 hours)
· Improper management (housing, feeding, training, transportation, etc.) which may determine the onset of common disorders (2 hours)
· Identification of early signs of disease in the context of breeding centres, stables, or housing, in order to establish and carry out activities in support to other professional figures (2 hours)
· Proper handling of horses in different operative situations (2 hours)
· Correct feeding, medication, handling, etc. to diseased horses in support and collaboration to other professional figures (2 hours)
· Knowledge of national and international legislation related to drug holding in stables, breeding centers, training centers (2 hours)
· First Aid in diseased or traumatized horses (2 hours)
Teaching methods
The lectures will be held in the classroom with the use of slide presentations. Practical training will take place in the veterinary hospital.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The learning will be continuously assessed during the course activities. At the end of the course, a slide presentation about an argument dealt during the Course chosen by the candidates will be carried out by students subdivided into small groups. The time available for each group of 4-5 people, will be about 30 minutes. The candidate evaluation will be based on: regular attendance to the course and practical training; ability to organize and explain the acquired knowledge; ability of speculative reasoning on the organized study; competence in using an appropriate specialistic speech, efficacy, linearity, etc. The final scoring, expressed in thirty-thousm, will be communicated at the end of the session presentations.
