Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with:
i) knowledge of the fundamental rules for preserving and promoting the health of the individual and of the communities and the principles and applications of preventive medicine;
ii) the understanding of the organization of Italian NHS including the issues of quality improvement and patient safety;
iii) the concept of global health and its essential elements to facilitate the understanding of the high-level phenomena impacting on health and influencing access to prevention and care for all;
iv) knowledge on the basic managerial dynamics that determine the governance and operations of a modern health organization.
Expected learning outcomes
Students:
i) consider the main determinants of health and disease;
ii) take adequate, preventive and protective actions against diseases, promoting the health of the individual and the community;
iii) understand the role of the professionals in the framework of the health care organizations and their leading role in quality improvement and patient safety;
iv) understand the key concepts of Global Health, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), international cooperation and the big challenges of migration health and climate changes;
v) have better understanding of role expectations connected to the exercise of the medical profession in the contemporary context of corporatization of health organizations.

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge provided by the biological and medical disciplines covered in the first 3 years of the course, in particular in the immunological and immunopathological, microbiological and statistical fields.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test relating to the topics of the different parts of the course: Hygiene, Health services organization, Global health, Health education and education for Health, Health management and applied economics. The test consists of multiple-choice questions (only one correct answer) in a 45-minute time frame. The test is passed if at least 60% of the questions are answered correctly.
The outcomes are communicated through the examination report with an acceptance option required of the student.
The examination grade is given in thirtieths.
There are no intermediate tests.
Hygiene and public health
Course syllabus
1. Hygiene. Health/disease determinants; causes and risk factors; epidemiology and epidemiological methodology; health promotion and disease prevention; principles of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; prevention of communicable diseases (notification and surveillance, isolation, diagnostic assessment, disinfection and sterilization, vaccines and vaccinations, etc.); prevention of chronic diseases (screening); epidemiology and prevention of the main vaccine preventable diseases; food-borne diseases; emerging infections; infections related to care practices.

2. Health services organization: Health Service in Transition, Analysis of general principles and values of health care systems and their performance using different data set. The Italian National health service. The principal challenges a health service face will be discussed with respect to hospital and primary care. Risk Management: definitions and case study. The quality of all the elements of the process of care is evaluated. The methods to assess quality are described.

3. Global Health: Key concepts and definition of global health (GH); Evolution of GH from tropical medicine to public health and international health; Global burden of disease, epidemiological transition and progress in health indicators; Recent phenomena and future of global health; Social and economic determinants of health; Era of the sustainable development goals (SDGs); Tuberculosis as a model in global health burden and response; the World Health Organization and other major actors in GH; International Cooperation; the great challenges: migrations and climate change.

4. Health education and education for Health: community interventions and patient health education; hot to promote protective behaviours and to reduce at risk behaviours through educational interventions; the contribute of neurosciences to Health education and promotion; educational interventions with pre-teens and teens; theoretical models to develop and implement education programs in the public health arena.
Teaching methods
Each credit includes hours of frontal and innovative teaching. The innovative teaching activities consist in the deepening of specific topics of the course syllabus, that will be selected by the students and the teacher. Such activity will be carried out in active collaboration between students and teacher.
The program will be carried out through lectures (7 credits) with the aid of didactic material (slide and/or video projections) and seminar activities. All teaching materials will be available on the Ariel platform on the dedicated website.

5. Health management and applied economics: in-depth analysis of economic implications of medical decisions and behaviors; setting priorities in health care; understanding why healthcare sector is the most complex and its specificities that have governance and managerial implications; professionalism and its consequences; organizational behavior and personnel management in health care organizations; new and emerging scenarios, trends and developments in health management and business-healthcare sector relations and partnerships.
Teaching methods
