Learning objectives
The course is aimed at third-year BA students of the degree course in Foreign Languages and Literature. It is divided into theoretical lessons, held by the course lecturer and aimed at providing students with the notions of Russian language and linguistics, and practical language classes, held by linguistic collaborators and aimed at acquiring practical skills in the Russian language. Year-long, the course supposes the acquisition of written and oral communication skills, with the related syntactic, morphological and lexical knowledge, corresponding to the third level (B1) of the official standard established by the Council of Europe for knowledge of foreign languages.
Expected learning outcomes
The knowledge that the course intends to offer mainly concerns the syntax of the Russian sentence: the student must be able to recognize at first sight the structure of any sentence, analyze and explain the functioning of the morphological categories therein. In particular, students will be provided with the concepts necessary for the analysis of the communicative structure of the statement and highlighted the main mechanisms for the expression of the communicative structure in Russian: the information structure and intonative constructions, the relationship between the communicative structure, the syntactic one and the word order. The knowledge of the structure of the actants of the verb and of the correspondence between the semantic roles, the syntactic ones and the morphological cases will be deepened. Then the complex sentence will be addressed: the criteria and types of subordination will be exposed, and the most frequent models in written and spoken Russian (constructions) will be analyzed. Furthermore, the tools of textual cohesion in the written and spoken Russian text will be analyzed: the discursive words, the collocations, the typical syntactic strategies adopted in Russian texts. Finally, a part of the course will be dedicated to the consolidation of translation skills, especially where there is no correspondence between Russian and Italian syntactic structures, and therefore to the practice of translation from Italian into Russian.

The 60-hour monographic course is roughly divided into three parts:
Part A will initially be devoted to an in-depth study of participial, gerundive and passive constructs, their formation and use. Subsequently, case syntax will be explored in depth. The study of the use of cases without prepositions will provide students with fundamental knowledge of verb regency.
In part B, the syntax of the simple sentence will be introduced, presenting its main and auxiliary elements and their respective modes of expression. The study of complements will be continued. The different types of simple sentences will then be introduced, and particular attention will be paid to the analysis of impersonal sentences.
Part C will be devoted to the analysis of the complex sentence. The relationships of coordination and subordination and the different types of subordinates will be analysed. Afterwards, morphosyntactic analysis of texts in Russian will be carried out, focusing on the functioning of the structures studied in the previous lessons.
Please note that practical classes are an integral part of the course; please refer to the appropriate sheet for the programme.

The course grants 9 CFUs. It is not possible to acquire only 6. For this reason, students will stick to the whole syllabus.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is in Russian and presupposes an initial proficiency of A2 level.
To take the exam, students must have passed the Russian Language 2 (written and oral) and Russian Literature 2 exams.

The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures, communicative assignments, analysis of texts , lexical and grammatical exercises. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the appropriate sheet.

The examination consists of a written test and an oral test. The final mark, expressed in thirtieths, will be the average of the two marks obtained. The examination mark can only be recorded when students have passed both the written and oral examinations.
The written examination can be taken from the end of the course, i.e. from May 2024, and the oral examination from June 2024.
The written examination will comprise the following:
1. Grammar test with multiple-choice, completion, transformation, concordance exercises with different sentence elements (without dictionary).
2. Translation of sentences from Italian into Russian (without dictionary).
3. Reading a text and comprehension with open questions.
4. Summarising from a text read by the mother-tongue teacher (without dictionary).
5. Translation of a passage from Italian into Russian (with bilingual dictionary)
Students who attend at least 80% of the monographic lectures and practical language classes in both semesters (at least 64 hours in the first semester and 48 hours in the second semester) can divide the written examination into two partial assessments, graded in thirtieths.
The first partial assessment will be held at the end of the first semester and will comprise
1. Grammar test with multiple-choice, completion, transformation, concordance exercises with different sentence elements (without dictionary).
2. Translation of sentences from Italian into Russian (without dictionary).
3. Reading a text and comprehension with open questions (without dictionary).
The second partial assessment will be held at the end of the second semester. It will comprise:
1. Grammar test with multiple-choice, completion, transformation, concordance exercises with different sentence elements (without dictionary).
2. Summarising from a text read by the mother-tongue teacher (without dictionary).
3. Translation of a passage from Italian into Russian (with bilingual dictionary).
Students who pass both assessments will be eligible for the oral examination.
Failure to pass one of the two assessments will result in the entire written exam being taken in the official appeals.
The average of the two partial assessments will give the overall grade for the written test. The average mark on the written and oral examinations will provide the final grade.
Attendance will be monitored by signature during lessons.
The oral exam will consist of an interview on focused topics, aimed at ascertaining student's theoretical and practical skills. Specifically, the student has to:
1. conversing in Russian on a topic assigned directly at the exam (the topic will require knowledge of the vocabulary covered during the practical classes),
2. reading a Russian text aloud and reporting the content in Russian language,
3. recognizing and analyzing from the syntactic point of view (in Russian) the different sentence types.
4. answering questions on grammatical topics focused in the lecturers.
Language in which students are required to take the exam: Russian.
For students attending practical classes (active attendance of at least 80% of practical classes): The above mentioned point 1 (only point 1) of the oral exam (conversation in Russian language) will be replaced of on ongoing evaluation, which will take place during all the year.
During the practical classes, the students will have to prepare and present the works assigned by the teacher and answer to teacher's oral questions. These presentations will be constantly evaluated by the teacher and will contribute to the determination of the final grade of the exam.
The other points of the oral exam (points 2, 3, 4) must be taken regularly in the exam sessions by all students, both attending and non-attending.
Students who do not attend the practical classes (participation in less than 80% of the classes) will also have to carry out point 1 of the oral exam in the normal exam sessions.

International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the lecturer promptly.
Examination arrangements for students with disabilities or certified DSA must be agreed upon with the lecturer, in agreement with the relevant office, well in advance.
