Learning objectives
The learning objective of the course is to develop knowledge related to the challenges posed to law (national, supranational and comparative) by the advancement of agrifood technological innovation. In particular, by the development of OGM techniques, cellular agriculture and by the production of Novel Food.
The course follows an innovative approach, since it aims at offering legal and scientific knowledge, involving professors and experts from different disciplines. This thus allows the students to have a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of the subject matter
Expected learning outcomes
The teaching aims to provide students with:
- knowledge on: relations between science and law; right to food; precautionary principle, food safety and food security; innovation in the agri-food sector; principles of European Food Law; Novel Food; GMOs and NGTs; cellular agriculture; food sustainability; nutritional and functional profiles of innovative foods.
- ability to understand the challenges posed to law by scientific-technological development in agribusiness;
- appropriate use of legal and scientific terminology.

The course is articulated in the following modules:
Module 1: Introduction to the relationship between science and law in the food&innovation field.
Module 2: Introduction to Food Law: the right to food in a comparative perspective; the precautionary principle; food safety vs. food security; food regulation and sustainable development.
Module 3: European Union Food Law: strategies, policies and regulation.
Module 4: Food Law and Innovation: GMOs and the Novel Foods Cases. Module 5: Quality, Safety and Sustainability Assessment of Innovative Food Products.
Module 6: Cellular agriculture and Novel Food production: production process, technical opportunities, challenges and applications

Teaching methods
The course includes lectures, given by experts in the various topics covered, following an interdisciplinary approach
Teaching Resources
Materials will be provided during classes and made available on the Ariel portal.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam will be oral. The evaluation of the question will take into account, in addition to the acquisition of the contents of the teaching, the ability to organize the knowledge discursively, the capacity for critical reasoning, the quality of the exposure, the competence in the use of the proper lexicon.
