Course syllabus
1. The holistic approach of ancient medicine in East and West.
In this first lecture, the interweaving of philosophical and medical knowledge will be reconstructed, beginning at the same historical stage (between VI and IV BC) in Greece and China. We will follow the evolution of the holistic view of the human being and treatment programs, centered on the "nutrition of life," to the threshold of the scientific revolution that will benefit from the fundamental contribution of Arab medicine and science.

2. The establishment of the dualist view of the human being and the scientific revolution in the West.
Analysis of the influence of the dominance of the dualistic view of the human being that arose with Christian philosophy (4th-5th cent.) and established itself with Descartes (17th cent.) in science. The clash between mechanism and vitalism: German and French physiology (19th cent.). The medical philosophers of the post-French Revolution period. The dominance of reductionism in medicine and nascent experimental psychology. James and Janet, thinkers on the countertrend.

3. The crisis of the reductionist model in medicine and psychology: PNEI as a new paradigm.
Revolution in the foundations of the sciences:
1) relativistic and quantum physics and the new view of relationships between phenomena;
2) the science of stress: from Selye to McEwen, from homeostasis to allostasis;
3) the study of molecular relationships between major biological regulatory systems and the psyche;
4) the epigenetic revolution;
5) the ongoing changes in psychological traditions and neuroscientific research.
