Learning objectives
Small Ruminant Nutrition and Quality of Products aims to provide the student principles of nutrition and feeding management of sheep and goats. Moreover, it provides basic information on sheep and goat farming and quality of ovine and caprine products: milk, meat, wool and fibre .
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: the student, at the end of the course, will have to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of nutrition and management in sheep and goat farming.
Applying knowledge and understanding : the student will have to demonstrate ability to apply nutrition and feeding management knowledge to simple simulated cases.
Making judgments: the student will have to demonstrate the ability to critically present the information acquired, by means of discussions in class and specific seminars.
Communication: the student is expected to use scientifically appropriate language, in particular terminology referring to animal nutrition. The practical activities and seminars are intended to stimulate the ability to use specific terminology and the ability to discuss scientifically with peers.
Lifelong learning skills: the student must gain the ability to use acquired knowledge to interpret new scenarios , for instance searching scientific databases and critically organising new information.

Lectures
Small ruminant production: milk, meat, wool, fibre. Global and national trends:
- Increasing global importance of non bovine milk: sheep, goat and camel milk (1 hour)
-Originality and nutritional quality of goat and sheep milk (2 hours)

Small ruminant nutritional requirements:
-Nutritional differences between large and small ruminants (2 hours)
-Sheep and goat feeding behaviour (1 hour)
-Evaluation of sheep and goat nutritional status (2 hours)

Small ruminant feeding and quality of their products (milk, meat, wool,fibre)
-Nutritional strategies in different physiological phases (2 hours)
-Traditional pasture-based feeding strategies: impact on ovine and caprine product quality (3 hours)
- Feeding strategies in relation to animal nutritional requirements and product quality (3 hours)

Practical activities
Diets for ovine species (dairy, meat): practical guidelines in different physiological stages (4 hours)
Diets for caprine species (dairy, fiber): practical guidelines in different physiological stages (4 hours)
Ovine and caprine breeds (dairy, meat, wool, fibre): main characteristics (2 hours)
Seminar on technical aspects and management of sheep and goat dairy farming (4 hours)
Exam preparation: practical activities for a successful test (2 hours)
Prerequisites for admission
The course has no specific prerequisites.
Teaching methods
Lectures (16 hours , 2 CFU).
Practical activities (16 hours, 1 CFU) .
Lectures and seminars will be presented with the support of Power Point slides.
Teaching Resources
Lecture notes on each topic will be provided online (in PDF format) prior to each class session.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The methods and criteria for assessing the student's performance are made available by the professor at the beginning of the didactic activities. Ongoing written test for students attending the course (three open questions). The time given for the written test is 30 minutes. Oral test for other students.
The score is expressed in thirtieths. The assessments are designed to test students' retention of core knowledge and measure their ability to apply this in different contexts. The results of the written exams will be available on Ariel
