Learning objectives
The course provides a critical overview of translation theories, with focus on specialized and multimedia translation. Practical translation skills will also be trained.
In line with the multidisciplinary nature of the programme, translation will be taught as an inherently transcultural process and product of mediation. For this purpose, classes will be a combination of hands-on job-oriented training and critical reflection on culture contact, in order to develop skills and competences that can be harnessed in other professional areas, as well.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will acquire advanced critical skills and competences, as well as translation, mediation and localization expertise in specialized communication.

Module 1
Main notions in translation theory. Translation norms and strategies for application to various kinds of texts, especially technical-scientific. Discussion of practical examples.

Module 2
Distinctive characteristics and main features of AVT, Spanish-Italia, specially dubbing.
Prerequisites for admission
Students must have advanced command of Spanish and native or near-native proficiency in Italian.
Students must also have a good preliminary knowledge of the main characteristics of domain-specific discourse in Spanish. For those who are not familiar with specialised discourse, the following textbook is prescribed for preliminary reading:

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written exam
- translation from Italian into Spanish of an except of about 250 words, c, a scientific or technical one (120 minutes); The use of various kind of lexicographic materials is allowed (bi-lingual dictionary, thesaurus, glossaries, online terminological resources). Students for whom Italian is not the native language may also use a bilingual dictionary between their first language and Italian.
- a short analysis in Spanish regarding theoretical aspects of translation and translation choices.
Oral exam

Oral exam
An interview based on the discussion of a short audiovisual text regardin the film studied or proposed during the lessons (with the approval of the teacher).
