Learning objectives
Providing the basic elements for understanding and using the main methods of stratigraphic analysis of depositional systems, integrating theoretical and practical aspects.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge on the main theoretical and experimental elements of lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, and practical applications to case studies.

Course syllabus
The teaching program focuses on the following topics:
1) Introduction to physical stratigraphy.
2) Magnetostratigraphy: physical principles of rock magnetism, mechanisms of acquisition of the natural magnetic remanence, and applications of the magnetostratigraphic.
3) Plate-stratigraphy and paleogeography: relationships between drifting tectonic plates, terrestrial zonal climate, and the first-order architecture of sedimentary basins, through the analysis of case studies.
4) Principles of sequence stratigraphy.
5) Cyclostratigraphy: main techniques of cyclic signal analysis and processing, and applications of the cyclostratigraphic method through the analysis of case studies.
6) Isotopic stratigraphy: basic principles of the oxygen and carbon isotope systems and applications in the field of stratigraphy.
7) Chronostratigraphy and geochronological timescales.
8) Case studies of Integrated Stratigraphy.
9) Practical activities.

Teaching methods
The didactic method of the lectures is the classic unidirectional method of knowledge transfer from teacher to student. However, students are often activated through the involvement in debates triggered by requests of clarifications. Heuristic-participatory methods are also applied during practicals either in the field or in the laboratory.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam consists of a written test on all the subjects treated during the course. The exam may also include the interpretation of stratigraphic schemes (exercises) in order to verify the skills acquired.
