Learning objectives
Basic and operative knowledge for the professions related to the activity of industrial production of compound feed for the main animal species
In-depth knowledge on the aspects of feed technology related to safety and sustainability aspects of animal production.
Expected learning outcomes
In depth knowledge of the organization and structure of the feed mill, the techniques and purposes of the processes carried out
Knowledge of the law aspects governing the production and marketing of feed and premixtures
To know and to use the nutritional characteristics of the main raw materials used for the production of compound feed.

Course syllabus
Structure of the Italian feed industry. Current legislative framework. Procurement, transport, reception, quality control, handling and storage of raw materials (cereals, oil-cake and oilseed extraction flour, animal-based flours, other simple feeds and by-products). Nutritional value of raw materials. Feed formulation. Processing: machines, processes, technological and nutritional implications of the main treatments carried out in the feed mill (grinding, waxing, extrusion, micronization and pelleting). Thermal treatments for the destruction of thermolabile anti-nutritive factors. Quality control on the finished product. Good production practices. Production of additives and premixes. Production regulations: rules concerning animal rationing. Relationship between feed used in ration and its environmental sustainability.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of biology, animal anatomy and physiology and animal husbandry and feeding.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons
Field activities: visits to production facilities, compounds feed formulation, evaluation of feed label for different livestock categories.

Notes from the lessons. Power Point slides used during the lessons, multimedia documents, scientific articles and links to websites downloadable from the online course on the Ariel Platform.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam. The evaluation is expressed by a vote out of thirty. The exam is divided into 2 parts.

Part 1: evaluation of the theory presented during the lessons.
Part 2: evaluation of a compound feed formulated by the student
