Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce Students to fundamental elements of Urban Design and Spatial Planning discipline. It is divided into 2 complementary modules, each corresponding to 6 ECTS and 48 lecture hours,
which are closely integrated and structured. The first module provides a general understanding of urban planning culture, models, plans and practices governing contemporary urban and territorial phenomena
dynamics, at different spatial scales of intervention. The second module goals to provide critical and practical tools for managing environmental resources in territorial regeneration strategies, deepening the
knowledge, in form and content, of main types of tools and techniques for multi-scale planning of environmental values. In order to impart theoretical knowledge and practical skills, lectures are
accompanied by an experiential training path and seminar meetings with representatives from the world of work. This will enable participants to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the course. The aim is to
acquire cultural, regulatory, methodological and technical bases for analysing, interpreting and evaluating the sustainability of transformation processes, also in multidisciplinary teams, and to develop a design attitude able of integrating environmental protection into territorial development.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the course:
- Know, illustrate and describe phenomena and theories related to the basic principles and methods of the discipline of Urban and Regional Planning.
- Apply knowledge to understand and interpret the characteristics that define urban and territorial systems.
- Identify new solutions for the management of sustainable territorial development processes.
- To use the vocabulary of the discipline correctly in order to explain, in a clear and comprehensible way to the public - as a non-specialist audience - the decision-making processes determining project and plan choices impact.
- Strengthen operational skills and critical, communicative and transversal competences in order to interpret and manage planning processes sustainability, working autonomously or in a team.

Assessment methods and Criteria
ATTENDING STUDENTS
The course comprises two partial examinations, one for each module, with a final mark:

‐ a written test, at the end of first module. It consists of a 60-minute timed written test with three open-ended questions. It tests knowledge of entire syllabus and reference material.
Written work must be handed in immediately at the end of the allotted time.
Students are not permitted to consult notes or texts during the examination. Students who have been identified as having a disability and/or specific learning disability (SLD) must agree in advance with the teacher the necessary compensatory aids (e.g. mind/conceptual maps).

‐ an oral interview , at the end of second module, during the presentation of a case study carried out by the student, in which the individual contribution must be recognisable.
Particular attention will be paid to the correct use of disciplinary vocabulary, critical and argumentative skills and precision of exposition.

The final assessment will take into account all the work done, including ongoing exercises, as follows:
- Ongoing exercises: 20%.
- Written test first module: 40%
- Final oral examination of second module with presentation of final paper: 40%.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The course provides for an examination consisting of two parts, one for each module, with a final grade:
‐ First module: a 90-minute written examination with five open-ended questions.
- Second module: an oral interview focusing on knowledge of entire syllabus and reference material.
The average of two parts will contribute to the final grade, expressed in thirtieths.
Particular attention will be paid to the correct use of specialist vocabulary, critical and argumentative ability and precision of exposition.
Non-attending students may take the examination on the same day, with a one-hour break between the written and oral part.
Module 1: Urban Planning I
Course syllabus
Basic cognitive elements and interpretative and critical coordinates of Regional and Urban Planning: definitions, concepts and basic theories of main planning models, with particular attention to relationships between environment, territory and the city; the evolution of multi-scalar planning system in Italy within the framework of reference legislative instruments; institutional and urban planning reform; practices and tools for managing transformation processes; structural plans and operational plans.
Teaching methods
Frontal teaching; participative teaching (group work, workshops); on-site teaching in a practical mode with a workshop approach.
In order to assist students in the acquisition of skills, teaching maintains a close correlation between theory and practice. Lectures are flanked by an experiential course of continuous exercises, with class discussion of the results, aimed at putting the knowledge acquired in the course into practice.
The on-going exercises are individual. They will culminate in the submission of a Portfolio/Book at the end of the module. Alongside the exercises, there will be dedicated reviews and further discussions, which may take place at conclusion of each lesson. Throughout the course, there will be further opportunities for in-depth study through seminars with professionals.

Module 2: Urban and Rural Design I
Course syllabus
Discovering planning tools and techniques for territorial values - from protected areas to systemic agro-environmental, landscape and cultural resources - at macro and micro levels, students will be able to engage in design analysis in order to apply urban planning techniques in the metropolitan area of Milan.
The on-going exercises are performed in a group setting, comprising of two to four students. The process will be accompanied by purposeful evaluations and additional opportunities for discourse, which may occur at conclusion of each lesson. The objective is for students to apply methodologies and techniques of territorial investigation and planning to gain knowledge and interpretation of areas, in which sustainable safeguarding, development, and transformation processes can be initiated.
At conclusion of the course, each student group will compile an analytical and design-focused Book detailing their individual contributions to the assigned case study. The results will then be presented in the form of a seminar, aimed at enhancing communication and transmission skills gained throughout the course.
Throughout the course, there will be further opportunities for in-depth study through seminars with professionals.
