Workshop: Reading Contemporary Spain On the Big Screen
A.Y. 2023/2024
Learning objectives
The workshop aims to provide the necessary tools for understanding and linking together a series of historical and socio-cultural phenomena that have marked the evolution of contemporary Spain from the end of the dictatorship to the present day. To do so, the teacher will highlight and comment special issues that will be useful to guide the students in their independent viewing of some films shot from the 1980s to the present day that, afterwards, will be discussed in class. In addition, each film will be placed in relation with a contemporary literary work or one with a similar theme in order to stimulate interdisciplinarity and foster the development of participants' critical thinking skills. In this way, it will be possible to practice, in a transversal manner, linguistic, cultural and literary skills related to the field of peninsular Spanish language and culture.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, the students will be familiar with some of the most significant phenomena that have marked contemporary Spain and will understand their repercussions in Spanish society through concrete examples, both cinematographic and literary. They will also be able to speak about them in Castilian with propriety, to highlight their connections and to identify and discuss their main dynamics. This last aspect will be encouraged above all through the comparison of filmic and literary works which will be evaluated, by means of an oral exam, once the lectures have ended.

Prerequisites for admission
A good knowledge of Spanish is required, since the films and lectures, as well as the novels to be read, will be in Castilian.
Teaching methods
There will be some parts of the class where a frontal teaching method will be used in order to provide the necessary tools for a correct understanding of the films and novels taken into account. Then the students will watch each film on their own, paying particular attention to the aspects highlighted by the teacher. Finally, in a class debate, each student will present his or her impressions of the phenomena depicted in each film, both in relation to a specific historical period and to a specific social context.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final assessment will consist of an oral test in which the candidate will dialogue with the teacher on a film and its related novel (chosen in advance and in agreement with the director of the workshop) discussed during the lectures and that focus on a specific aspect of contemporary Spain. The candidate's ability to explain, argue and reason independently and critically will be assessed, with a particular emphasis on her ability to contextualise (from a historical and social point of view) and relate the themes and phenomena displayed in the chosen film and novel.
