Learning objectives
The course provides knowledge on the main diseases of the oral mucosa, and the methods of transmission of the infectious pathology and prevention of cross-infection.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to describe the clinical manifestations of the most common diseases that affect the oral mucosa and will be able to implement preventive strategies to avoid the transmission of infectious disease and cross infections.

Preliminary knowledge of the concepts of anatomy of the head and neck district and those relating to general pathology and physiology is required.

Course syllabus
Introduction to oral medicine: general objectives.
Oral ulcers: traumatic ulcers, infectious ulcers, ulcers as expression of autoimmune diseases.
The spots: white spots (leukoplakia, verrucous proliferative leukoplakia, oral lichen planus); red spots (erythroplakia); dark spots (physiological hyperpigmentation, iatrogenic hyperpigmentation, nevi and melanotic spots, malignant melanoma).
Oral growths: fibromas, pyogenic granulomas, and HPV-related lesions.
Oral cancer.
Pathologies of the elderly: xerostomia, hypersalivation, candidiasis, denture stomatitis.
Orofacial pain: burning mouth syndrome, persistent idiopathic pain, atypical odontalgia.
Correlations between systemic conditions and disorders of the oral mucosa.
Oral manifestations of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Oral Hygiene Techniques in special needs patients in long-term care contexts:
The module intends to provide the knowledge related to the elaboration of care plans and oral heath projects for the patient in long-term care contexts, particularly elderly patients and patients in a vegetative state. The course provides the basic knowledge for the drafting of a protocol of preventive dental care, the treatment of real cases in long-term care units and the definition of the main anamnestic, pathological and therapeutic needs for the frail patient. The course also affords the definition of a protocol for the maintenance of total and partial mobile prosthesis.

- The patient on bisphosphonate therapy and new molecules modulating bone metabolism
