Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with a grounding in Islamic doctrine and institutions in terms of their historical development, and to explore the most significant events in the modern and contemporary history of the Middle East.
The ultimate goal of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand and critically analyse modern-day events in the Middle East from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Teaching will focus on recent and ongoing conflicts, regional antagonisms and Islamic revivalism.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have a firm grasp of the major junctures in the modern and contemporary history of the Middle East and will understand the reasons behind the locally and regionally deployed actions and processes interacting with the international system. Students will also be able to relate their learning to the knowledge acquired in previous teaching activities and will be able to discuss these issues using the most appropriate vocabulary.
The knowledge and skills acquired will enable students to independently continue their studies in the field of international affairs and to work in various professional environments.
