Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge and tools used in the sociological analysis of: the different forms of mobility at a global level; policies for the control of national borders in a European context; processes of subjectivation, subtraction movements, freedom and autonomy in migrations.
Moreover, the course provides a critical reflection on the main concepts, topics and research in the field of migration studies, so as to promote an understanding of: the impact of globalisation processes on people and cultures; the different forms of citizenships; the actions which can lead either to integration or alienation.
The knowledge and tools acquired will enable students to understand the dynamics underlying global migratory phenomena and their impact on European society, and to familiarise with the interpretative tools for a reasoned analysis of migrations in the frame of a pluralistic and post-national society.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to understand and be able to accurately and eruditely explain the main theories, concepts and research with regard to global migratory processes and their impact on European society, in a comparative perspective and using the language of social sciences.
Thanks to the knowledge acquired through the analysis of case studies and of particularly pressing issues in the field of migration studies, students will gain a critical and empirical understanding of the dynamics at the root of the different forms of mobility, as well as of challenges and opportunities which the European Union has to face resulting from the rising transnationalism in the migration regime.
