Qualitative Analysis of Inorganic Drugs

The course, which includes practical training, allows the student to approach the practice of chemistry for the first time, particularly of analytical chemistry. Its main purpose is the learning of correct, accurate and conscious "modus operandi" in the elementary analytical chemistry procedures. To achieve this goal, the fundamental principles of qualitative chemical analysis are illustrated in the lessons and implemented in subsequent experimental laboratory, with particular regard to inorganic substances of pharmaceutical and toxicological interest. Furthermore, the student has the opportunity to perform many recognition procedures described in the Italian and the European pharmacopoeias.

At the end of the course, the student will acquire the basics of the analytical methods applied in the analysis of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest. The student will be able to choose the analytical method suitable for the solution of a analytical problem and will be also capable to apply the basic techniques for the analysis of an unknown substance. More specifically, the student, starting from a sample of inorganic drugs, will characterize the chemical composition indicating, at the end of the analytic procedure, the brute formula of the analyzed substance. Furthermore, the student will acquire the basic notions of the pharmacological and / or toxicological properties of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest.
During the final examination, the students will demonstrate to comprehend the proposed questions and they will be able to process the knowledge acquired during the lectures and the practical training.
