Learning objectives
Through the analysis of some well-documented case studies, the workshop intends to provide the historiographical and methodological bases to undertake Environmental History research for the medieval period, in order to show the complexity of the relationship between the different medieval societies and the environment.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop, students will have become more familiar with the methodological problems posed by the environmental history of the Middle Ages, also through the analysis of traditional sources applied to a research on the Environmental History of the Middle Ages.
Students can deepen their knowledge of the main topics by means of special readings agreed with the lecturer, and of course discuss these topics with the lecturer himself, either by e-mail or during office hours.

The workshop will offer students the main notions regarding Environmental History for the Middle Ages, introducing different fields of study and different historiographical approaches.
Through the analysis of the sources, the relationships between man and the environment in the medieval period will be explored, both by highlighting the multiple ways of environmental management by human societies, and by observing the different natural factors as actors acting in history.

Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the admission to the MA degree in Historical Sciences.

The workshop will be organized through teacher's frontal lessons and the participatory discussion of the presented sources.

Assessment methods and Criteria
- Method: evaluation at the end of the course
-Type of examination: in addition to attending lessons, it will be necessary to work, in groups or individually, on the materials and sources
- Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; ability for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of expression, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy and clarity.
- Type of evaluation method: approval of 3 CFUs.
- Assessment result: approved/not approved.
