Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge on cataloging and digital enhancement of historical museum heritage, with a focus on the importance of images in the perspective of visual history, of multimedia information and digitization for the documentation, communication and physical and cultural accessibility of the heritage itself.

In addition, the course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge on cataloguing records on national (SiGeC Web) and regional (SiRBeC Web for Lombardy Region) cataloguing platforms, as fundamental tools for the integrated management and enhancement of knowledge in the museum context.

The topics covered in the course will include:

1. Introduction to Museology, overview of museum types, museum functions, and major museum professions. Exploration of the role of university museums and the University's museum heritage.

2. Tools useful to the essential functions of the museum: digitization, role of images in documentation, understanding and communication, and accessibility of the historical-museum asset. Study of cataloguing cards, standards and national and Lombardy region cataloguing platforms. Exploration of digital opportunities for both on-site and online enhancement and communication.

3. Workshop activities: creation of catalographic record, digital storytelling for the valorization of both physical and digital museum assets. Examination of international experiences, such as the Google Arts & Culture platform.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:

· Use linguistic, methodological and conceptual tools for the documentation, digitization and integrated, analog and digital communication of museum heritage, both on-site and online.

· Understand the types of museums and the related professionals involved.

· Use the main national and Region of Lombardy cataloguing rules and platforms and be aware of the importance and opportunities offered by the use of these tools for the essential functions of museums.

· Apply multimedia approaches to documentation and museum accessibility Issues.

The workshop aims to provide students with a training course on the digital cataloguing and exploitation of historical-museum heritage, integrating theoretical knowledge and practical skills,
The main focus is on the methodology for compiling catalogue forms.
Students will learn the basic use of the main cataloging platforms, both at national level (SiGeC Web) and at regional level of Lombardy Region (SiRBeC Web). These tools represent the fundamental infrastructure for an integrated management of the museum heritage, allowing not only the systematic documentation of the assets, but also their effective management within the museum context and valorization. Through this training, students will acquire the basic skills necessary to operate in the field of digital cataloguing, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge of cultural Heritage.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the admission to the MA degree in Historical Sciences.

Teaching methods
The course is divided into frontal lectures and and exercises aimed at providing students with knowledge on the main methods and tools for digital cataloguing of museum assets and their exploitation on site and online.
In particular, during the workshop the student will have the opportunity to:
- to know the different types of museums, the functions of the museum and the main museum professions, with particular reference to that of the Conservator, the Cataloger and the Registrar;
- learn the basic concepts for the computer management of museum assets;
- gain first-hand knowledge of the standards and structure of computerized catalogue forms;
- to know the structure and use of the national catalogue platforms (SiGeC Web) and of the Lombardy Region (SiRBeCweb);
- explore the opportunities offered by digital technology for the enhancement of historical and museum heritage both on-site and online.

Class attendance is mandatory.
Teaching Resources
Knowledge of the subjects covered in the course and their practical application is required.
Materials and tools will be provided to students during the workshop lectures.

Students will also have the opportunity to meet with the teacher/teacher either by mail or during the reception.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Method: evaluation at the end of the course

Type of examination: in addition to attending lessons, evaluation during and after the workshop on the basis of compilation of cataloguing cards and/ or the development of a project to enhance historical-museum assets.

Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate the knowledge acquired, ability to critically reflect on the work performed; and skills in using the tools of the discipline, competence in using the vocabulary of the exposure quality discipline, Communicative effectiveness and clarity.
Type of evaluation method: approval with recognition of 3 CFU.

Assessment judgement: approved/not approved
