Course syllabus
The "Journalism and History" workshop will begin with an overview of key events in Contemporary history related to historical memory and national identity, and how these events are portrayed by the media.
Subsequently, the "Century of Humiliation" in China will be explored. During the 110 years between the First Opium War (1839) and the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949), China endured a series of humiliations that profoundly shaped its national identity. Understanding this historical period is crucial for grasping the current domestic and foreign policies of China, now the world's leading economic power.
Throughout the workshop, each student will be invited to write a short essay on a specific aspect of the topic, either by studying historical documents or interviewing witnesses and experts. The essays will be revised and published on www.krisis.info, the global politics journal founded and directed by Elisabetta Burba.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the MA degree admission.
Teaching methods
Attendance is mandatory. The workshop includes both a theoretical and a practical component, during which students will be required to write articles on historical dissemination. In some of the sessions, historians, journalists, and firsthand witnesses will discuss the connection between historical memory and national identity.
