Learning objectives
The workshop aims to strengthen the skills acquired by students in previous archaeological excavations.
Expected learning outcomes
The workshops will allow the students to acquire the skills and toolkit necessary to work independently in an archaeological excavation. Particular attention will be paid to the teaching of excavation techniques, graphic and photographic documentation and management of archaeological finds.

The excavation takes place in the area called "Kolymbethra", a valley between high limestone rock walls within the Park of the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, between the sacred area of ​​the chthonic divinity and the terrace which houses the so-called "Temple of Vulcan". From literary sources (Diodorus Siculus and Athenaeus) we know that the "Kolymbethra" hosted at the beginning of the 5th century. B.C. an artificial water basin with swans, fish and all kinds of birds all around. The excavation project in the area aims to identify the archaeological traces of such a preparation and to clarify how the water entered the valley, how it was distributed, retained (evidently via a dam wall), and finally how it escaped. the aim of the project is also to understand the ideological meaning and function of Kolymbethra. The activity takes place in collaboration with the Park of the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento and with the FAI which has custody of a splendid Mediterranean garden in Kolymbethra.
Prerequisites for admission
The excavation laboratory is of an advanced type and therefore requires the student to have a minimum familiarity with the methodology of stratigraphic archaeological excavation and the drafting of the relevant documentation (stratigraphic unit sheets, etc.). However, this does not mean that a (limited) number of students without experience can also be accepted.
