Learning objectives
The laboratory offers a comprehensive array of technical and professional tools of the archaeological excavations. The activities will be conducted in different contexts in northern Italy between the late protohistory, Roman, and late antiquity periods.
Expected learning outcomes
The laboratory provides an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of and practical experience with archaeological excavation tools. The concepts of stratigraphy and various analytical documentation procedures will be applied, including the description of units and features, manual and digital surveying, and the interpretation of contexts. Furthermore, the course will provide students with the requisite knowledge and tools for managing and filing the finds discovered during the excavation.

Course syllabus
- Theoretical framework. Archaeological stratigraphy: soils, sediments, and human action.
- Fieldwork logistics and work safety.
- Excavation techniques. Practical stratigraphy and use of digging tools (shovel, hand pick, trowel, etc.).
- Recording methods. Manual drawing techniques, use of topographic instruments, photography, excavation sheets and harris matrix
- Finds management. Description of material classes, finds cleaning, recording, and storage techniques.
- Digital data management, law fulfillments, and scientific publication.
