Teaching Workshop: Archeological Drawing
A.Y. 2024/2025
Learning objectives
The archaeological drawing teaching workshop fulfills technical-professionalizing training of students enrolled in the degree course in Cultural Heritage Sciences, providing them with basic tools for archaeological drawing of artefacts. Main goal of the lab is to allow students to find employment as a designer of archaeological finds at museums and superintendencies.
Expected learning outcomes
The teaching workshop teaches students how to draw archaeological artefacts (ceramics, metal and lithic tools).
Lesson period: Second semester
Assessment methods: Giudizio di approvazione
Assessment result: superato/non superato
Single course
This course cannot be attended as a single course. Please check our list of single courses to find the ones available for enrolment.

Lesson period
Second semester
Course syllabus
Classes will focus on the theoretical knowledge of rules and guidelines used in the edition of archaeological contexts and on the practical skills used for archaeological surveys; other topics include reproduction of 1:1 scale drawings, digital and manual (with ink) polishing, information about thesis or scientific publications drafting.
Prerequisites for admission
Because of its basic nature, the course does not require students to have any previous drawing skills. All the methodological tools necessary to develop the ability to draw archaeological artefacts will be provided throughout the course. Basic knowledge of ancient pottery categories is considered a preferential prerequisite.
Teaching methods
The lessons will be divided into a first theoretical-practical introductory part with the presentation of the history of studies and the main modes of graphical representation in use, and a more substantial practical part in which each student will engage with the tools of technical drawing, developing the ability to represent both entire ceramic forms and fragments.
Teaching Resources
The following publications can serve as learning support:

Assessment methods and Criteria
Learning assessment will occur through the review of the practical activity within the whole course.

Second semester
Course syllabus
The programme focuses on theoretical knowledge of the standards and conventions used in the edition of archaeological complexes and on practical skills for the manual survey of architectural artefacts, from life drawing and scale drawing to ink and digital polishing, useful for the preparation of a degree dissertation or scientific publication.
Prerequisites for admission
Previous skills are not necessarily required of the student as all the methodological tools necessary to acquire the ability to draw architectural artefacts will be provided within the course.
Teaching methods
The lessons will be divided into two parts: the first, introductory and theoretical, will be devoted to the study of the structural, morphological and decorative characteristics of the architectural elements, together with a basic knowledge of the main methods of graphic representation of archaeological finds. The second part will be practical: each student will measure himself/herself with the tools of manual survey, developing the ability to draw an architectural element and to digitise it in a Cad system.
Teaching Resources

Assessment methods and Criteria
The verification of learning will take place through the evaluation of the practical activity carried out within the course.

Second semester
Course syllabus
This laboratory is divided into a series of theoretical and practical lessons, with a clear prevalence of the second ones. During the first lessons, in addition to a brief introduction to the purpose of drawing, we will see the different techniques of archaeological drawing and the possibilities it offers. The practical lessons, on the other hand, will allow students to use the technical drawing instrumentation and to measure themselves with pottery finds - sherds and vases -, metal and other materials, learning how to represent them and render them in the best possible graphic way. At the end of the lessons the topic of polishing will also be introduced - both by hand and digitally - for the preparation of the final work or any publications.
Prerequisites for admission
Since this is a laboratory with practical drawing activities, no previous knowledge is required. During the lessons, the necessary tools will be provided to develop skills in the drawing of archaeological finds.
Teaching methods
Lessons will be organized in a first part, more theoretical and introductory, relating to the history of archaeological drawing, its methods and its purposes, and a second part with proper practical drawing activities, during which the students will deal with different types of materials trying to understand what could be the best possible graphic rendering.
