Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the broad outlines for employing the sources to understand the main political, economic, social and religious elements visible during the centuries of the late ancient age to the early Renaissance.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student will have acquired the the essential tools to carry out research in medieval history, with particular reference to the medieval period:
-building a bibliography through the available research tools (catalogues and online repertories, dictionaries, databases);
-knowing the main types of medieval sources: reading published records and finding the way through the unpublished

Applications for admission must be sent to the professor by e-mail ([email protected]) and must contain the indication of the Degree Course and of the academic year of attendance. The professor will confirm or not the enrollment of the requesting students founded on the number of applications received and assessed the correspondence with the recommended prerequisites.
Prerequisites for admission
The workshop favors the second-third year BA students and MA students (first- or second year) related to Department of Cultural and Environmental Heritage.
The workshop will be held in Italian language.
A basic knowledge of Latin is desirable.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is mandatory. Laboratory is delivered through lectures aimed at providing the student with the essential tools to carry out research in the humanities, with particular reference to:
- know and understand linguistic complexity and linguistic variations;
- select and organize information in a relevant and systematic way;
- identify the relationship between a document and the historical, cultural and artistic context in which it was produced;
- critically evaluate texts from different periods and genres;
- consciously use the specific terminology of the discipline;
- present the results of a research in an appropriate and logical way;
- choose the bibliographic tools and sources of the discipline, evaluating their reliability and adequacy;
- develop awareness of the value of an interdisciplinary approach.
These skills will be first acquired by practicing on research tools and sources, and then through the guided tour of archives, libraries and museums. Discussion with the teacher during lectures is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the ability to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
The teaching is also based on didactic material provided on MyAriel platform: slides, texts, videos, documents.

International and Erasmus students are invited to promptly get in touch with the professor to arrange a reading plan (available in French) for exam preparation.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Method: the final evaluation will derive from the students' attendance, their active participation in the discussion and the conduct of any assigned tests, such as the transcription of ancient documents or the creation of short educational-informative videos.
Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; ability for critical reflection on the completed work.
Type of evaluation method: the final mark will be an evaluation recorded as approved/Not approved. It is not possible for students to reject the final mark.
The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the relevant office.
