Learning objectives
This teaching workshop offers a view of ancient Reading in Greco-roman-byzantine world; the different ways of reading, writing materials and book formats are studied.
The students will be invited to actualize ancient sources, where relevant.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the topics, even in an multidisciplinary framework; consideration of its own reading experience according to ancient sources; writing skills enhancement (of a short article, cultural journalism level); improvement of public speaking (cultural journalism level).

- History of ancient books (formats, materials, writing) and readers from ancient Greece to Late antiquity
- The Ancient Libraries; books as a roll, as a codex
- From the oral tradition to roman Recitationes, literary circulation
- Texts and Ways of reading: silent/ aloud; read to study, for leisure
- The lectio divina and monastic reading practices
- Writing Themes today about cultural journalism (and exercices).
Prerequisites for admission
No requirement.
Teaching methods
- Frontal teaching and a Group of students as Distance Learning. Class Lab Mailing
- Students will find all the Material on Ariel (https://ariel.unimi.it/)
- From students: Presentations on Lab topics and discussion
- From students: Presentations of Papers
- Cultural journalism, that is Individual Papers (that will be corrected by the Teacher).

An accurate bibliography shall accompany each subject (optional reference for students). A wide collection of images and links will be available on Ariel (https://ariel.unimi.it/).
Assessment methods and Criteria
Students must:
attend Lab regularly; prepare Presentations or Papers. All the undergraduate students have to write a paper, Master students can prepare a presentation. The Lab final evaluation is "Approved" or "Not-approved".
