Learning objectives
The workshop will introduce students to the study of written evidence from the cultures of Ancient Italy and Etruria through an analytical method based on three main fields of research: Archaeology, Epigraphy and Linguistics. Recognising that each discipline is rooted in its own basic skills and knowledge, the workshop involves collaboration with linguistic experts. This constructive interaction aims at building an interdisciplinary pathway in which students can focus their interests and highlight their skills.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: Students acquire the methodologies of the different fields of research applied to the written evidence of the civilisation of the Etruscans and other peoples of Ancient Italy.
Skills: through participation in the course and the teaching material provided, students can explore the relationship between epigraphic, archaeological and contextual observation of objects and monuments in order to grasp
their specific role as indicators of actions and behaviour within the historical framework to which they belong.

Course syllabus
The laboratory extends over various lines of research that take place sequentially, and aim at acquiring the cultural and historical outline of inscribed objects. The archaeological analysis of the inscribed objects comprises their production and context. The epigraphic analysis comprises the choices of writing, the forms of the letters and the reading of the text. The linguistic analysis comprises the interpretation of texts and has been entrusted to a scholar who is an expert in in this field (Prof. Giulio Facchetti).
Prerequisites for admission
It is assumed that the students are interested in acquiring epigraphic methods according to an interdisciplinary approach.
Teaching methods
Interdisciplinary teaching that involves theoretical and practical aspects in all disciplines involved in the epigraphic research.
Teaching Resources
Reference texts will be provided for each topic covered in the workshop.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The teacher and the experts involved in the workshop verify that all activities are followed and carried out in a proper manner.
