Course syllabus
The workshop objective is to provide students with basic knowledge for the study and processing of post-excavation data and with both theoretical and practical skills necessary to develop interpretative hypotheses of archaeological contexts and sites.
In particular, the course aims at deveoping students' ability to manage excavation data in digital format and return cartographic and interpretative summaries through the use of the QGIS Open Source Geographic Information System.
Furthermore, practical examples on the application of GIS in archaeology (archaeological maps, archaeological risk maps, etc.) will be illustrated, exploring how this technology can support the documentation, conservation and study of Pre- and Protohistory.
Prerequisites for admission
The course has no specific prerequisites. It is open to both students of the three-year degree in Cultural Heritage Sciences and the master's degree in Archaeology. Preliminary completion of at least one exam in archaeology and the excavation laboratory is highly recommended.
Teaching methods
Lectures with practical exercises in the classroom and independent learning, individual topics covered in the lectures may be further explored by means of specific scientific contributions to be consulted.

Assessment methods and Criteria
During practical activities, students will be assessed by the lecturer with regard to the achievement of the expected objectives. Attendance is mandatory and it requires minimum 80% of scheduled class hours.
