Learning objectives
This workshop offers an overview of the key aspects in the digital transformation of research methods within the humanities. It presents basic notions on data management and on coding of texts using markup language. For this purpose, some digital tools designed for the study of Medieval and Renaissance literary corpora will be presented.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the main issues relating to the galaxy of digital humanities.
- Ability to recognize the main data encoding formats
- Basic knowledge of a markup language for the humanities
- Ability to select and apply the digital methodologies learned to a corpus of texts
- Ability to use digital tools to manage data in tabular format
- Creation of a shared digital product in the form of an open-source database

- Introduction to digital humanities: methodologies and issues
- Review of the main digital resources in the literary field, with reference to the medieval and Renaissance context (database Epistulae)
- The concept of text in digital humanities
- Data formats and formatting
- Basic knowledge to encode information in TEI-XML

Teaching methods
Each meeting will be divided into a first explanatory part (participatory lesson), followed by individual or group practical exercises on the concepts and operations illustrated to the students. The coding of poetic or epistolary texts in the TEI-XML language and the use of open-source IT resources and tools designed for the study of medieval, humanistic and Renaissance literary texts are envisaged.

An accurate bibliography shall accompany each subject (optional reference for students). A wide collection of images and links will be available on Ariel (https://myariel.unimi.it/).
Assessment methods and Criteria
The constant participation of the students and the fruitful performance of the activities assigned are verified. The Lab final evaluation is "Approved" or "Not-approved".
