Learning objectives
The teaching workshop aims to provide the main techniques for the instrumental analysis of voice, with a focus on the main hardware and software within the wider frame of the digital humanities.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the main software for the analysis of voice; ability at distinguishing the sounds of human voice through instrumental techniques; ability at setting a protocol of experimental research for the analysis of voice in different contexts and at the interface with different fields of research.

- The human voice and its analysis within the field of digital humanities
- The hardwares: record and preserve the voice, with a particular emphasis on oral archives
- The softwares: analysis of the human voice with ELAN and PRAAT
- 'Hands-on' applications on ELAN: language documentation and multimodal analysis of speech
- 'Hands-on' applications on PRAAT: sociophonetic analysis of the human voice
- Introduction to forensic phonetics through the digital analysis of voice

Prerequisites for admission
Having attended at least a course in General Linguistics or Historical Linguistics.
Teaching methods
Each meeting will be divided into a first explanatory part (participatory lesson), followed by individual or group practical exercises on the concepts and operations illustrated to the students. In particular, we will use the Open Source softwares PRAAT and ELAN for transcription, annotation and analysis of human voice from files in various audio or video format.
Teaching Resources
All the materials will be given by the professor during the various meeting, together with a reference list of the main works on each subject (optional reference for students)
Assessment methods and Criteria
Verification of active participation by students during the laboratory.
Final essay on the topic proposed, starting from the data analyzed in class.
Final result will be give as "Approved" or "Not Approved".
