Course syllabus
The workshop will open with a reflection on the nature of the poetic text, and a collaborative effort at defining it. It will proceed with a rehearsal of the tools of poetic language to come soon to the students' production of poetic texts (original and in translation) and their discussion in class by means of the sharing of critiques.
Prerequisites for admission
The workshop is open to all students who are interested in understanding the nature of a poetic text and how poetic language may be manipulated. Practices may include translating, so the knowledge of a second language is welcome.
Teaching methods
The workshop is delivered as such, that is, as a class production, analysis, and discussion of texts. Students are expected to write and present poems, translations, and brief commentaries/critiques of classmates' texts.
Teaching Resources
For reading and reference:
Mario Santagostini, Manuale del giovane poeta, Mondadori, 2017 (1988).
Stefano Colangelo, Come si legge una poesia, Carocci 2003.
Angelo Marchese, Dizionario di retorica e stilistica, Mondadori, 1992.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The workshop's results will be assessed mainly based on students' active participation in the work in class and its preparation at home, that is, their contribution to the production and discussion of poetic texts and possibly translations, as well as brief critical comments on them.
