Teaching Workshop: Sources and Documents for the Study of Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations

Learning objectives
The course pursues a threefold objective: 1) to introduce students to research methods and to some of the great themes of ancient history (with particular reference to cultural interactions in the ancient Mediterranean) by means of a selection of case studies; 2) to guide students to a correct and sound use of the sources (in the plurality of their typologies and of the specific questions they pose) and of the bibliographical tools (both traditional and digital) available with a view to historical reconstruction; 3) to enable students to gain personal hands-on experience based on what he/she has learnt in class.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) recognise some of the fundamental methodological issues that characterise historical research applied to the reality of the ancient Mediterranean; 2) critically appreciate the problems related to the use of different types of sources; 3) use the main bibliographical and digital tools, in particular with reference to literary and epigraphic sources.

Course syllabus
The workshop will deal with a selection of major themes concerning the history of the ancient Mediterranean, including institutional, social, cultural, religious aspects, in an interdisciplinary perspective and through the use of all types of available sources (literary, epigraphic, papyrological, archaeological, numismatic) and bibliographical and digital tools essential for the study of classical antiquity. Presentation of topics and research methods by the teacher will be followed by practical exercises by the students on a selection of sources to be agreed on with the teacher.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of classical languages is a preferential but not mandatory prerequisite.
Teaching methods
The workshop includes both the presentation of topics that are proposed for collective discussion and practical exercises that are conducted in class using materials prepared in advance by the students.
Teaching Resources
Materials will be made available on the Ariel platform during the course and will include ancient sources, bibliographies and digital resources, scholarly articles, power point presentations.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Students' continued participation and successful completion of assigned activities will be verified. The workshop final evaluation is "Approved" or "Not-approved".
