Teaching Workshop: Video Production for Research and Territorial Communication

Learning objectives
The workshop aims at introducing students to the methods of filming and editing audiovisuals intended for territories research and storytelling. The workshop will be held in a residential format in order to practice the methods acquired within a field experience.
Expected learning outcomes
Students must show an ability to master the different skills learned during the laboratory in the context of the realization, individually or collectively, of a visual research in an urban context of geographical interest

Course syllabus
The workshop intends to lead students through the collective process of making a film that tells the story of a neighborhood in the city of Milan. The focus of the work will be both on the audiovisual result per se, and on the usefulness of the audiovisual as a tool for research and as a mean to relating to territories.
The workshop will take place in the field, hosted by a reality in connection and relation with the piece of the city to be told.
The workshop seeks as far as possible to integrate practical experience with theoretical training without rigid boundaries between one and the other, touching on the following topics and developing the following practices:
- Observing through the camera, listening through the microphone: how audiovisual tools can help the researcher to isolate and bring out key elements of an area.
- Planning an audiovisual: how to move from collecting audiovisual material to planning a documentary.
- Collective storytelling: how to manage a collective creation process by integrating different sensitivities but keeping a clear focus.
- The field recording: basic techniques for audio recording in documentary flmmaking.
- The video camera: basic elements of photographic theory and techniques.
- Basic theory of film language, the different kinds of audiovisual products, linguistic choices, shooting attitudes, editing choices.
- The relationship with documentary subjects: how to choose the subjects, how to manage different types of interviews, how to relate to the realities of the territory.
- Basic elements of audiovisual production: how to plan shootings, how to manage practical problems, how to put an audiovisual project into reality.
- Outlines of audiovisual editing: cataloguing and archiving data, the different editing tools, formats and codecs.
PLACE AND PERIOD
When: The workshop will take place approximately during the second half of May over 5 consecutive days (precise dates to be defined).
Where: the workshop will take place entirely as field work, in a host location in Milan (host location to be defined)
Number of students: maximum 10
ENROLMENT MODALITIES:
Students should send an email to pre-enrol for the workshop by 31 March 2025.
Those interested are requested to send an email to Prof. Martelli ([email protected]), attaching:
- A short accompanying text describing whether and how they have experience or familiarity with audio-video and/or photographic tools.
- The list of examinations taken.
Priority will be given to students who are familiar with audio-visual and/or photographic tools and/or have taken the Urban Geography examination.
Students are reminded that prior to the start of the course they must register through SIFA in order to obtain the 3 CFUs on the dates that will be indicated on the page:

The Laboratory is open to students of the Laurea Triennale (Undergraduation) in Human Sciences of the Environment, Territory and Landscape.
Priority will be given to students who have an interest in the use of audio-visual and/or photographic tools.
The workshop will take place mainly outdoors. Adaptability and willingness to walk are required.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Each student will be assesed according to the methodological rigor they will apply in their research work and the proactivity with which they will participate in the creation of an audiovisual collectively produced by the group during the workshop.
