Learning objectives
This course aims to complement the morphological and syntactic knowledge acquired during Year I and II by applying theoretical notions to the comprehension and analysis of texts related to different topics, with a focus on contemporary and media language.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Understand, translate and produce texts of medium complexity on familiar topics without using the dictionary;
- Understand and translate into Italian complex written texts that they have not seen, before, with the aid of a dictionary;
- Have a conversation on familiar topics in Arabic, at an intermediate level;
- Understand and use some fundamental idiomatic expressions.

Grammar - We shall complete the work of the first two years, completing acquisition of the basic concempts of Arabic morphology and syntax.
Media Arabic - Students will be introduced to the language of the Arabic media through the Media Arabic manual as well as original texts and multimedial material. Students will be offered basic training in comprehension and translation of contemporary Media Arabic in both directions, and will also compose their own written material.
Texts - We will work on the comprehension, linguistic analysis, and translation of literary texts. Students will be trained in how to optimise their use of the dictionary for comprehension of complex texts.
Prerequisites for admission
To take this course, you must have passed Arabic Language and Mediation II exam (written and oral). *You may not take the written exam for this course if you have not passed the oral Arabic Language and Mediation II exam.*
Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures and language practice classes. Attendance is compulsory for language practice classes. The MyAriel website for the course contains a Course Blog, detailing the contents and activities for each class as well as additional references and practice material.

Assessment methods and Criteria
WRITTEN EXAM (approximately 3 hours):
1- Listening and comprehension of a short item of news (no dictionary).
2- Translation or summary of a short item of news from Arabic into Italian (no dictionary).
3- Grammar questions (no dictionary).
4- Translation of a short narrative or essay from Arabic into Italian (with dictionary).
5- EITHER a translation into Italian of a short text (news or narrative) OR a short written production on one of the topics treated with the language practice classes (with dictionary).

STUDENTS ARE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL EXAM AFTER SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING THE WRITTEN EXAM
1- Conversation in Arabic on the topics covered in the language practice classes.
2- Reading aloud, translating, morphological and syntactic analysis of a known text.
At the end of each semester, students who have attended language practice classes will have the opportunity to take the partial conversation test in a pre-exam.
Students who cannot attend lectures are advised to follow the Course Blog on the MyAriel website.
