Learning objectives
The course aims to give students an understanding of the translation process from Chinese to Italian, with regard to literary as well as specialised texts, while helping them hone their critical reflection and communication skills in a formal context. A significant part of the coursework will be devoted to practical translation work, requiring students to draw on the whole range of skills acquired during the master's programme. Being confronted with different text types and genres, the class will work cooperatively, questioning choices and discussing translation issues, to identify and apply suitable translation strategies in response to specific case studies. Thanks to the continuous teacher-students interaction, students will strengthen their critical thinking and gain better understanding of the notions, theories and approaches of contemporary translation studies, while becoming familiar with the main difficulties of translating from Chinese.
Expected learning outcomes
The themes of the texts selected for translation practice will be closely aligned with the focus of the degree programme, including topics of key relevance for today's Chinese society. By the end of the course, students will be able to recognise the specific challenges involved in translating literary or specialised texts from Chinese into Italian, to adopt appropriate and effective strategies in response to translation issues, and to contextualise their choices using subject-specific concepts and terminology. The course is designed to foster critical, communicative and, above all, practical skills to enable students to approach translation tasks in a professional and competent manner. To this end, teaching will also focus on existing translation technologies, to promote their informed and professional use.
