Learning objectives
The course aims to develop a deeper understanding of the specific concepts of international commerce learned in the EU Law syllabus, with a focus on the regulatory framework which governs the European Union's commercial policy and frames its commercial relations with third countries.
Students will get to know the underlying principles of the subject and how these are applied in customs law. They will also gain an understanding of the conditions for importing and exporting goods and services and for foreign investments, and will acquire a broad overview of the European Union's role in global trade.
In this respect, classroom activities (such as individual and group case studies, analysis of regulatory sources and simulations) are useful for learning field-specific terminology and gaining first-hand practical experience of the main regulations applicable to professional roles focusing on foreign trade and investment, for which the degree programme looks to prepare students.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will understand and be able to adequately explain the regulatory principles governing the European Union's commercial policy with third countries, including as regards trade in services and foreign investment. Students will also understand how regulations apply specifically to the European customs system, including the rules governing common and integrated customs tariffs, origin of goods certification and the conformance of non-EU goods with internal market regulations for the purpose of their circulation within the European Union.
By taking part in classroom activities, students will also develop the skills to communicate using the correct field-specific terminology and to experience how regulations are applied in practice. Students will adopt a hands-on approach which stands them in good stead both for further study and for access to the world of work.
