Learning objectives
The Data Lab aims to provide students with knowledge of qualitative methods and with technical skills specifically related to designing and conducting interviews. In the first part, the Lab will focus on the principles of qualitative and ethnographic research, as well as on qualitative research questions and designs, drawing on numerous examples of completed studies and on the practical exercise planned during the Lab. Students will be encouraged to develop an interview guide on topics of their own interest and to conduct semi-structured interviews (2-3 interviews, individually or in groups depending on the number of attending students), thereby experimenting the most effective ways of accessing the field and learning the meaning of "active listening." The interviews collected through this exercise will then be analyzed in class, both to evaluate together the quality of the conducted interviews and to learn qualitative data analysis techniques. The exercise will also include a careful discussion of the ethical and deontological aspects inherent in qualitative and ethnographic research designs. The Lab will then move on to illustrate research designs based on interviews, once again allowing students to practice constructing a sampling framework, and will conclude with an in-depth exploration of how to effectively communicate research findings. The course will thus alternate between lecture-style sessions and hands-on, fieldwork-based lab activities, including discussion and group reflection.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the Data Lab, students will be able to:
- Identify the most appropriate qualitative research technique based on their research questions, and in particular the most suitable type of interview;
- Draft the guide for a semi-structured interview;
- Conduct a semi-structured interview;
- Develop the analysis of the interview;
- Develop a sampling strategy;
- Present the research findings in written and oral form.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Responsible
Lesson period
Second trimester
Course syllabus
LESSONS 1-2: Introduction to qualitative research: the research question; the research design; ethnography; types of interviews.
LESSONS 3-4: Conducting an interview: how to design an interview guide; how to access the filed; the interview setting (how to ask questions, what is active listening, how to follow up...); ethical and deontological issues.
LESSONS 5-6: In-class reading of selected transcripts and discussion: Did we manage to obtain the information we wanted? How did we ask the questions? How did we follow up?
LESSON 7: Analysis of qualitative empirical material.
LESSON 8: Designing a qualitative research project based on interviews: what kind of research questions, which type of interview, which sampling criteria.
LESSON 9: Communicating research findings: ethnographic writing.
LESSON 10: Presentation of research results by students.
Prerequisites for admission
The Lab is open to first-year and second-year students who already have basic knowledge of social research methods. The Lab will be especially useful for those students who plan to conduct (or are conducing) empirical research for their dissertation with qualitative methods.
Teaching methods
Each lesson will include a lecture-style teaching part and an interactive part, with exercises and individual or group in-class activities, based on small assignments (eg. Drafting an interview guide, devising a sampling strategy, transcribe an interview ) and on the collected interviews. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they learn during the lab to their own research interests. At the end of the Lab, students will prepare a small presentation based on the interviews they will have collected.
Teaching Resources
Lectures will be based on different sources, among which (not compulsory for students):
- Cardano, M., 2020. Defending qualitative research: design, analysis, and textualization. Routledge.
- Holstein, J.A. & J.F. Gubrium 1997. "Active Interviewing", in D. Silverman (Ed.), Qualitative Research: Theory, Method and Practice, London, Sage, pp. 116-129.
- Emerson, R.E., R.I. Fretz, & L.L. Shaw 1995. Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes. Chicago, The University of Chicago Press.
Assessment methods and Criteria
There will be no final exam; however, to obtain the 3 ECTS associated to the course, students should attend at least 80% of the Lab (eight lessons out of ten), take part in the in-class activities and carry out the required assignments.
