Learning objectives
The general objective of the course is the knowledge and understanding of spoken and written academic English through the analysis of authentic situations and texts related to the disciplines and topics of the degree course.
By the end of the course students will consolidate communicative skills, will be more independent language users and will master academic English for presentations and research projects.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will:
-be able to recognize academic vocabulary and main ideas and details from academic texts
-become aware of the strategies they need to organize academic texts
-be able to use the appropriate skills to write academic texts correctly
-utilize several strategies for presenting ideas and for participating in academic discussions
-master subject-specific vocabulary for discussing academic subjects
-be able to support opinions with relevant reasons and examples

Course syllabus
The course consists of 40 hours, delivered weekly through two sessions of 2 hours each, starting on September 25, 2024 (First Semester)
Module A (20 hours)
This module is designed to introduce students to the development and reinforcement of writing and oral presentation skills specific to discipline-based academic texts.
Students will receive guidance on the specialized vocabulary, grammatical structures, and syntactic patterns typical of English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
Throughout the module, students will engage in interactive activities and peer exchanges to apply and consolidate the theoretical concepts covered.
Module B (20 hours)
Building on the skills developed in Module A, this module focuses on enhancing students' academic writing and oral presentation abilities.
Students will be required to complete a short research project on a topic relevant to their degree program and prepare an academic-style presentation based on their findings.
Throughout the module, students will receive continuous guidance and personalized feedback on strategies and processes to improve their work.
The project and its presentation will be closely monitored and will form the basis of the oral exam.
Prerequisites for admission
Students are expected to have attained at least an intermediate level of English proficiency (B1 according to the CEFR)
Teaching methods
The course is conducted in English and is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, using a variety of engaging and interactive methods. These include:
Reading and analysis of authentic academic materials;
Task-based activities with immediate feedback;
Guided exercises focusing on EAP-specific vocabulary and grammar
Video resources to support comprehension and discussion
Academic discussions centered on discipline-specific topics
Use of web tools and applications to foster a more active, reflective, and autonomous approach to EAP learning and usage

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is in English and consists of a written part and an oral part. The written test will cover the topics discussed in class (Module A) and will include both theoretical questions and exercises. The oral exam will involve the presentation of a topic related to the course of study, following the guidelines that will be provided during the course
