Learning objectives
During laboratory exercises will be provided informations about the workflow of a biological sample.
In the field of general bacteriology gram stains will be provided and the antibiogram will be presented and interpreted. As regards viral diagnostic, the principles of molecular biology techniques (PCR/real-time PCR and gene sequencing), useful for diagnosis and monitoring of viral infections and drug resistance analysis, will be discussed. In addition, interesting clinical cases will be presented.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge on the main characteristics of microrganisms (structure, laboratory methods of identification, diseases)

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Course syllabus
· Biosafety standards and conduct in the microbiology and virology laboratory
· Microscopic observation and identification of microbiological preparations
· Principles of staining and slide reading
· Description of the main microbiological diagnostic procedures in bacteriology and mycology
· Introduction to virological diagnostic procedures, with reference to the main techniques used (antigenic, serological, and molecular)
· Management and diagnostic significance of different biological matrices:
- blood samples (blood, serum, plasma)
- respiratory tract samples
- cerebrospinal fluid
· General interpretation of the clinical significance of microbiological and virological results in relation to the clinical picture
· Principles of appropriateness in requesting microbiological tests
Prerequisites for admission
Passing the Microbiology examination is required. Students are expected to have basic knowledge of clinically relevant microorganisms, general principles of microbiological diagnostics, and fundamental biosafety rules.
Teaching methods
Practical and professional training activities in the microbiology laboratory, including guided exercises, direct observation of diagnostic procedures, and discussion of results with the tutor.
Teaching Resources

- La Placa, Principi di Microbiologia Medica, Ultima Edizione
- Konemann's Testo Atlante di Microbiologia diagnostica / Microbiologia Medica

Assessment methods and Criteria
Learning assessment is based on a practical laboratory examination. The test includes recognition of a microscopic slide and a guided description of a microbiological diagnostic procedure performed in the laboratory.

Assessment is based on accuracy of identification, ability to describe the key steps of the procedure, appropriate use of scientific terminology, and basic understanding of clinical relevance. The assessment is expressed as pass/fail.
