Scandinavian Theatre

Learning objectives
The course presents and discusses the content and research methods of theatre and drama studies, in the field of the Scandinavian theatre and its circulation and reception outside of Scandinavia. This approach includes historical and historiographical, theoretical and critical aspects, applied to significant case studies from modern and contemporary Scandinavian theatre, investigated in terms of dramaturgy, aesthetics, and theatrical practice, as well as in terms of textual, scenic, and transmedial reception, including forms of intercultural mediation.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will acquire knowledge of the history, sources, methods, and tools of theatre and drama studies and develop methodologies for analysing dramaturgical practices, interpretation and direction, with a special focus on the modern and contemporary Scandinavian context. They will also learn how to identify and analyse theoretical-methodological and historical-cultural problems relevant to the study of Scandinavian theatre, including intermedial and intercultural re-elaborations.

Course syllabus
The course takes place in the autumn term and consists of the following parts:
Part A: Odin Teatret (A. Meregalli - 10 hours)
Part B: Protagonists of contemporary Scandinavian theatre (to be defined - 30 hours)
Part C: Analysis of European stagings and performances (M.C. Cavecchi - 20 hours)
Students interested in acquiring 6 ECTS will follow the syllabus of parts A and B. Students interested in acquiring 9 ECTS will also add Part C.
Part A will analyse OdinTeatret's activity with an overview from the company's origins to the present day and in-depth case studies on individual performances.
Part B will focus on the work of a number of significant playwrights and directors in Scandinavian theatre from the 1950s to the present.
Part C will be organised in seminar format to develop individual skills for the analysis and personal study of plays and performances from contemporary European theatre.
This programme is valid until February 2027.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is taught in English. A knowledge of English at level B2 or higher is required.
Teaching methods
Teaching methodologies: frontal lessons; analysis of stagings and performances, reading of dramatic works both during classes and individually; individual study of secondary literature.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The assesment will take place through examination interviews with the course instructor. The student can choose the language for the interviews among Englis Italian, or a Scandinavian language. A preliminary written assignment on an agreed topic may be required. Details will be provided in the classroom and on the MyAriel website at the beginning of the course.
All interviews (for 6 or 9 ECTS) must take place in the same examination call. To pass the examination, each individual part must be passed (A, B and, if applicable, C). The final mark, expressed on a 30-scale, is given by the weighted average of the results of the individual parts.
